Dental Cleaning

The basis of sound dental care is routine maintenance. We customize cleanings on the basis of your periodontal, (gums and bone) health. We utilize medicated gels and "chips” along with prescription mouth rinses in problem areas when indicated. Ultrasonic scalers are sometimes used to make the procedure more comfortable and effective as well.

Recognizing Periodontal Disease

Four out of five teenagers and adults have Periodontal Disease and most of them don't even know it. That is why it is so important to know the symptoms.

  • Aching or itching in the gums or jaw
  • Bleeding or red and puffy gums
  • Chronic bad breath
  • Receding gums or loosening teeth
  • Spaces appearing between the teeth
  • However, Periodontal Disease may develop without any symptoms.

What causes Periodontal Disease?

Periodontal Disease starts with a sticky, almost invisible coating on the teeth called Plaque. Plaque contains living bacteria, food debris, and saliva. If plaque is not completely removed within two days it turns into a hard, rough crust called Calculus, which is also known as Tartar. Calculus is so hard that only the Dentist or Hygienist can remove it with the help of special instruments. Calculus may extend under the gums where it can be the most harmful. The Toxins produced by the bacteria can inflame the gums to a condition known as Gingivitis, as well as cause destruction of the bones underneath. All of this can occur without any noticeable symptoms to the patient. Once enough bone is lost, the tooth loosens, and either falls out or must be extracted.

Preventing Periodontal Disease

To prevent periodontal disease, you and Blossoming Smiles must work together. You must brush and floss your teeth every day following the instructions of your Dentist or Hygienist. We can also recommend extra measures such as oral irrigation or other between the teeth cleaners. We can examine your teeth for signs of Periodontal Disease and take x-rays for bone destruction in the early stages.
